Natural Modernism

NATURAL MODERNISIM

Redefining Modern: The once-cold aesthetic gets a warm upgrade.

‘Modernism’ has had a makeover: lose the idea of white, stark, ultra-minimal interiors that you associate with the word. The new ‘natural’ modern is warm, cozy, tactile, and can even be a little glamorous.

The warm metal trend has been going strong for a few years now, and it shows no signs of slowing. From brass and copper to rose gold and bronze, warmer-toned metals are definitely here to stay. As shown here, the Landmark Single Lever tap in Urban Brass is a great way to warm up a modern space with a hint of ‘urban bling’.

Not too long ago, modern was code for smooth. Shiny stark white bathrooms, high-tech materials, texture-less floors. These days, designers are using a variety of natural materials, leading to an altogether more tactile take on modern. Think stone, pitted concrete, terrazzo, and timber that sits comfortably between laminated and rustic.

VINTAGE/URBAN HIPSTER

Vintage Urban Hipster

Landmark Pure in City Bronze.

Most of today’s favourite contemporary interior trends come straight out of the homes of hipsters. It’s the car-boot sale/salvage yard ‘look’ exemplified by those cool vintage styles uitcases, Polaroids, reclaimed wood, Edison bulbs, and refurbished industrial lighting. And it’s not just London and Manchester you see it – this style is spreading across the world, from Bangkok to Beijing, Seoul to San Francisco.

Although “hipsterism” is really a state of mind, it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities, and it is this “effortless cool” urban bohemian look that we’ve called ‘Vintage/Urban Hipster’. It is exemplified in this series of images we’ve created using Landmark Pure in the City Bronze finish. These images clearly demonstrate the versatility the Landmark collection.

Pure

Scandi/Nordic

Scandi/Nordic

The ‘Scandi/Nordic’ look is all about keeping things simple and investing in quality. Bleached or untreated timber for example with white walls, the grain in the wood adds texture and interest. The shapes are simple and graphic with strong form. The palette ‘natural’ and ‘understated’, a perfect foil for the pure elegant lines of Landmark ‘Pure’. The soft mellow polished nickel harmonising beautifully with this cool Nordic ‘look’.

Inspired by the snow, mountains and fjords of the Nordic countries, Scandi/Nordic Chic is proving to be enduringly popular across the globe as it transcends fashion. This timeless interior style works particularly well in bathrooms. Think pared back cosiness, clean lines and texture. The Danes have a concept they call Lagom. This Swedish word describes the feeling when something has ‘perfect balance’ or is ‘just right’. It perfectly embodies the ethos, behind Landmark. Our desire has been to capture the magical state of something that is ‘just right’. This may be difficult to attain, but when you do, something inside tells you it’s Lagom!

Industrial Chic

Industrial Chic

Baring all takes courage, and ‘Industrial Chic’ is about exposing all that lies beneath to achieve a raw, edgy style. What other styles are at pains to hide, Industrial Chic boldly puts on display. Perhaps born out of necessity in trying to convert old or abandoned warehouses, factories and barns into spaces conducive to urban living, this design style celebrates engineering and mechanical ingenuity like little else.

Functional features are refashioned or re-presented to provide decorative elements.

Nowhere is this more evident than on the levers and cross tops of this Landmark twin control thermostatic shower in stainless steel finish with matt black chrome details. Form and function are both equally important considerations. The beautifully decorative yet functional knurling features on both cross tops and levers offer a degree of practicality.

Many lofts and old factories being converted using ‘Industrial’ interior design ideas come with exposed brick, concrete or as here distressed metal sheet that can become an amazing feature in the re-styled space. It offers an interesting opportunity to juxtapose the raw with the refined, the sleek and modern with the vintage and classic.

Marble Revival

Marble Revival

Few materials provide so much understated elegance, sophistication and style as marble and now this luxury material is making a big comeback. This is a natural reaction to the recession, according to Chelsea interior designer Maurizio Pellizzoni.

Marble cladding for the walls and metal accessories in hues of brass create a stylish return to the 70’s aesthetic in the colour combination and tonalities. Brass is fast becoming the new most fashionable metal for the bathroom. In combination with the ‘nobility’ of marble it produces an irresistible combination.

Graham & Brown’s trend forecaster Paula Taylor is a huge fan of marble. She says: “We predict that marbled textures in particular will be an extremely big theme for 2016. The patterns in marble look as if they’ve been hand painted, mimicking ocean waves. Marble effect is a look that’s been borrowed directly from Mother Nature, instead of being created by a designer. It really adds something new to the outdoors/indoors trend that seems omnipresent in interior design.”

Here we see the ‘warmth’ in this Landmark shower handset and riser rail set against the opulence of a marble wall with a natural broken edge contrasting the precision of the knurled handset grip.

Bauhaus Reborn

Bauhaus Reborn

Although visual signposts such as stark geometric shapes, simplicity and elegance of design might be the easiest-to-spot indicators to Bauhaus’s effect on contemporary fashion, fittingly, for a movement defined by its core principles, it’s the school’s ethos that has proven to have the most enduring influence.

Here, we have used those defining principles to create our own wallpaper backdrop. This ‘graphic’ has been used to act as a foil to the beautifully detailed and proportioned Landmark 3 hole chrome plated bath filler, a product that exemplifies Bauhaus’s simple approach, which came as a reaction against the fallible and frivolously decorative human touch of the arts and crafts movement that preceded it.
